South End
|
| |||||
The South End was originally one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Boston and is an extension of Back Bay proper. The streets of Lower South End such as Arlington, Berkeley, Clarendon, and Dartmouth run all the way from the Charles river in Back Bay, connecting the two inner-city neighborhoods. The changes that took place in the mid-century saw many inner-city residents move to the suburbs. The South End became an area known for its rooming houses and transient population. In the last three decades, however, this unique part of the city has undergone a renaissance marked by innovative and upscale architectural restoration. Some of the most striking examples of contemporary renovations, within the structures of existing brownstones, can be found here. Today, the South End is home to families and single working professionals alike. There is also a large number of residents with artistic backrounds, because the South End is also home of the Boston Center for the Arts and the Boston Ballet.
